One inscripción costs 85 euro and buys two convocatorias, not one. That single fact is the most expensive thing people get wrong about this exam, and the Instituto Cervantes states it plainly on its own page.

This is the one thing on these pages that is worth money rather than time.
The Instituto Cervantes says, in so many words, that each registration offers two opportunities to pass the test. A candidate who sits, gets a no apto and goes back to the shop to register again has bought a third attempt at full price while the second one was still sitting there unused.
There is a deadline on it. The second convocatoria has to be sat within six months of the first exam date, so it is not an open-ended credit. Six months is five or six sittings, given that the exam runs on the last Thursday of most months, which is enough time to re-read the manual and not so much that it can be left indefinitely.
The CCSE is one of four things a nationality application by residence asks for, and it is the only one with a fixed monthly calendar, so it is usually the piece that sets the pace.
Two dates matter and they pull in opposite directions. A pass is valid for four years from the date the acta de calificación is approved, so sitting very early in a ten year residence period can mean the certificate expires before you apply. And a file at the DGSJFP has a legal deadline of one year that is regularly exceeded, so leaving the exam until the residence period is complete adds its own months to the end.
The honest answer is that neither extreme is right and the arithmetic is personal, which is what Belong Spain does with the dates you give it rather than with the general case.

The last Thursday, in every month except August and December, which leaves ten sittings a year. The date is the same at every examination centre.
Your NIE. The Instituto Cervantes says candidates must register with the NIE during the registration process, and registration is made through its own shop rather than at the centre where you sit.
